INYOKERN, Kern County — Thursday, October 22, 2026; 2 p.m. update. The National Weather Service office in Hanford issued a Flood Advisory at 12:41 p.m. Pacific for northeastern Kern County, citing thunderstorms and heavy rainfall detected on Doppler radar. The advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until 3:45 p.m. Thursday, unless officials change, cancel or extend it.

Locations specifically named in the bulletin: Inyokern, China Lake, Indian Wells Canyon, Walker Pass and Onyx. The advisory warns that low-lying and poorly drained areas could see minor flooding, and water could cover roads, especially Highways 14, 178 and 395. Some low-water crossings could become impassable.

EVENING WEATHER UPDATE · October 22, 2026

Inyokern’s separate earlier Flood Advisory for northeastern Kern County was scheduled to expire at 3:45 p.m.; it should not be described as an active 6 p.m. alert. The broader Kern County Flood Watch remained scheduled to run until 8 p.m. on Thursday. Official NWS bulletin · Check live road restrictions.

What the weather service observed

At 12:37 p.m. forecasters detected heavy rainfall from thunderstorms using radar. The advisory was released four minutes later. The NWS description is a warning of possible and expected flooding impacts; it is not independent confirmation that a named highway is closed or impassable at every point.

Road safety for Inyokern and China Lake

Never drive into water covering a roadway, especially washes or desert low-water crossings where the surface may be damaged or washed away. If water blocks the roadway, turn around. Drivers should consult Caltrans QuickMap for official recorded closures, restrictions and traffic conditions before travelling.

Special caution: Do not confuse this advisory with the separate Southern California Edison outage in Trona, covered by Searles Valley News. An electrical interruption at one Searles Valley address does not prove loss of power in Inyokern or China Lake. Likewise, a Flood Advisory is not itself proof of power failure.

What to expect this afternoon

NWS Hanford has also maintained a broader Flood Watch for Kern County’s Indian Wells Valley, Mojave Desert, mountains and surrounding areas through Thursday evening, warning that repeated storms could cause additional flash flooding. A watch indicates conditions favor flooding; an advisory describes a more specific developing concern. Residents should review the official NWS watches and advisories and any county alerts for newer messages.
